One of the things I most love about the Australian character is the ingenuity that has stemmed from making do with what we've got. On this day of rememberance, I wanted to draw attention to this rifle in the War Memorial in Canberra.
One of the Diggers developed it, using whatever was lying around. It could be fired above the trenches, while the Digger stayed safely below. There is even a periscope type arrangement so the rifle can be aimed. And the angled shoulder stock can be seen tucked behind the sandbag.
This isn't meant to be a glorification of war. It is a tribute to the bravery and character of the members of our armed forces.
Lest we forget
