I got to spend hours in the workshop this morning, it was so refreshing. I had one of those small moments of insight, while I was watching Harold, the fabricator, work his magic. Harold was welding "stick", or arc welding. A layer of flux covers the weld as it cools so that it doesn't oxidise. This is called the "slag", and is removed after the weld has been completed. Every weld turns into Christmas morning, you want to "unwrap" the each joint, to make sure the weld is firm, unblemished, pure. The chipping hammer rings out, the slag is removed. A little package of excitement with every joint.
Of course, if the weld has impurities or inclusions, out comes the grinder and you have to start all over again! So refreshing to be visibly poductive!
