Why am I actively with the union? Well it is all about protecting the worker against capitalist corporations. I am not currently in a particularly hostile working environment. My employer is a large tertiary institution. However, in Australia there has been years of effort to establish a minimum working condition. This allows some protection for the regular worker. Union membership is a crucial component to protect these conditions.

My union does not function exceptionally well, but the principle is sound. I am actively involved so that I can make a positive contribution, both within my working environment and by proxy throughout the country. This certainly causes some conflict in my working life, but I live my life according to the directions from the voice in my head. That voice is unequivocal about the benefits of the unions.

I can certainly understand the mindset of the conservatives (Liberals). In fact if I were to adopt their ideology and strategies I would likely find myself in a better financial position and higher conventional standing within society.

There are many issues more important than personal gain.
